Excerpts from Edward's presentation, "Yoga and Health," for the World President's Organization.
Q: What is yoga?
A: A philosophy, not a religion. There are many aspects of yoga. Ethics, breathing, and physical poses are all parts of
practicing yoga.
Q: What is the point of yoga poses?
A: The physical poses are designed to promote good health and release tension in the body so one can have a peaceful
mind [and a happy life!]
Q: Who can do yoga?
A: Anyone. Any age or any fitness level can enjoy yoga. We teach yoga to everyone from elementary school kids to
retirees. All that's required is a willingness to learn [and have fun!]
Q: Where does yoga come from?
A: Yoga originated over 5,000 years ago in India. The oldest writings the Yoga Sutras and the Upanishads
date from this time. Yet Yoga is not carved in stone. It is continuously evolving and growing with many different
styles as people constantly develop and explore the practice.
Q: Why should I do yoga?
A: Yoga helps with:
- Flexibility
- Deep relaxation
- Feeling "centered"
- Strength building
- Balance and coordination
- Healing
- Happiness and general sense of well-being
These are things that can benefit anyone and everyone.
Q: Can I start yoga when pregnant?
A: Absolutely! You can practice yoga during any trimester. Pregnancy is an incredible time to explore yoga because
practicing will keep your body healthy, your mind relaxed, and allow you to connect to your growing baby in a beautiful way.
Many physicians agree that yoga breathing practices and strengthening and stretching muscles help prepare for delivery.
Private yoga is particularly suited for pregnant women, as a knowledgeable VILGA YOGA instructor can modify poses to make them
appropriate for the mom-to-be and her child.
Q: How long does it take to "get good" at Yoga?
A: "Getting Good" doesn't mean mastering difficult poses.
Someone can practice yoga for years, developing much greater health and peace of mind without ever bending themselves into a
pretzel. Although a steady practice is required to really get the greatest benefits, even a single yoga lesson can teach you
something about the body and the mind.
The most important thing is just getting started!
